Week Beginning 24.03.25
Spring has finally arrived, and we’ve been making the most of the sunshine! Whether it’s developing our tennis and hockey skills in PE, getting creative in DT, or diving into exciting topics across the curriculum, Year 5 has had another fantastic week of learning.
This week’s blog entry features Daniel, Riley and Evie S from 5MC:
English
We’ve now completed our narrative unit based on The Explorer by Katherine Rundell, writing from different characters’ viewpoints. This week we wrote a diary entry based on Con’s perspective. Most of us got very sassy. Now, we are moving onto persuasive writing.
Maths
What’s Maths? Maths! We concluded our topic on decimals and now we are moving on to… Percentages! This will put factors of 100 to the test and apply our knowledge in everyday situations, like working out discounts in a shop.
Science
Our science lessons have been buzzing with excitement as we’ve explored pollination and the life cycles of insects, birds and mammals.
We’ve learnt how bees, butterflies, and even the wind help move pollen from flower to flower, allowing plants to grow fruit and seeds. We also studied different life cycles, discovering that insects like butterflies go through a complete metamorphosis, while birds hatch from eggs and grow through different stages. It’s been fascinating to see how nature works!
DT
Year 5 have been busy in DT, exploring Brazilian cuisine! This week, we sampled a traditional Brazilian recipe and discussed ways to change it before we cook it ourselves at the end of term. Some of us suggested adding more seasoning, while others thought about changing ingredients to suit different tastes. We can’t wait to put our own twist on the dish when it’s our turn to cook!
Geography
This week in Geography we have been learning about land use and climate.
We’ve been exploring the similarities and differences between the UK and Brazil, focusing on land use and climate. We discovered that while the UK has a mix of farmland, cities, and countryside, Brazil is home to the vast Amazon Rainforest, which plays a crucial role in our planet’s oxygen supply.
We also looked at climate differences—while the UK has cool, rainy weather, Brazil enjoys a warm and humid tropical climate. Some of us love the idea of sunshine all year round, but others aren’t so sure about the high temperatures and sudden rainstorms!
But which one is best? The Amazon? Or, Europe? 😊
PE
We’ve been sharpening our skills in PE this week, enjoying the fresh air while working on our tennis and hockey techniques. In tennis, we’ve been practising our serving and improving our backhand shots, while in hockey, we’ve been learning how to compete in matches, focusing on teamwork, passing, and defending. It has been a lot of fun!
Computing
We created our own soundtrack related to a part in The Explorer led by the lovely Mrs Collier-Bett.
