Week Beginning 10.03.25
Year 5 have done an excellent job in continuing with their learning while also taking part in British Science Week. From showcasing science projects, to conducting a whole school investigation, to having visitors join us and bring science to life with hands-on workshops. Overall, Year 5 have demonstrated great scientific skills and enthusiasm throughout this week. This blog will now include a special entry, featuring the pupil's voice from 5MC:
“Hello, parents and carers of Year 5! We are very pleased to announce today’s blog will be written by Anna, Lola, Elena and Jess A. Enjoy hearing about our fun-packed British Science Week!
On Monday, it was the KS2 science fair! We had a great time showing all of our wonderful projects to KS1, family and friends. We also went to see the KS1 science fair on Wednesday, which was really fun.
On Tuesday, we had a visitor from Fizz Pop Science. Her name was Magnetic Meg and she taught us about carbon dioxide, acids and alkaline. We also made windmills to understand sustainable and renewable energy. We had lots of fun decorating our designs with lots of colours and patterns. Thank you, Magnetic Meg!
Next, we had engineers from the company, Ricardo, who came to visit. First, we did a quiz with objects to determine whether they would sink or float. Then, in groups of four, we made boats out of foil, lollipop sticks, straws and sticky tape. We then had to predict how many stones the boats we crafted would be able to hold, before putting them to the test! The winning team held over 50 stones without even sinking, and the winning team became proud owners of a [fake!] gold medal.
On Friday we did our whole school investigation. We were investigating whether all black inks are the same using chromatography, which is a method used by forensic scientists. Forensic scientists are people who help the police solve crimes by analysing evidence. It was fascinating to watch the colours separate and reveal their hidden components.”
