Coten End Primary School
Week Beginning 14.10.24
What a week of activity!
So much has been happening in Year 5 this week there has hardly been a moment to catch breath. The classes have been learning all about friction in science; finding out and investigating examples of how friction can be both useful and a problem. Throughout their work on this interesting topic, Year 5 have been developing their skills of working scientifically by planning and carrying out different investigations. Some have been seeing what happens when different substances are added to jelly and how easy it then becomes to pick up. Others have been using Newton meters to see how much force is needed to overcome friction on different surfaces.
Flute lessons continue at a pace. The children have now learnt three different notes on their instruments and have developed their skills at reading stave notation. In just a few short weeks, there is already a strong sound coming from many of the children. Whilst this is not an easy skill, Year 5 have been demonstrating our school value of determination well.
We also held our first come and learn sessions this week, where parents were able to come in and see for themselves how we develop reading skills in Year 5. Thank you again to the many parents who were able to come in and support their children with their learning. We hope you found the sessions useful. We will have more sessions in spring and summer when we will look at maths and writing.
As if this wasn't enough, Year 5 have also been demonstrating their creative side by designing and creating Mayan masks out of modroc. They worked carefully and diligently to produce some really impressive pieces. They have closely examined the features from the existing artefacts to replicate them in their own designs.
